Avoiding perfect

Do you secretly want to be perfect? Or openly want to be perfect?

It’s summer and I notice the idea of ‘perfect’ floating all around me. The perfect vacation. The perfect summer day. The perfect summer body. The perfect newsletter (my all-the-time desire for you).

Which gets me thinking about Sheryl Sandberg’s quote:

“Done is better than perfect.”

I’m an advocate for constructive living. (The opposite of a distractive lifestyle which has us on a hamster wheel of running ourselves ragged and still not feeling fulfilled.)

Sheryl’s idea of getting things done is a reminder that perfect is a great place to hide behind. Our fear of being judged and our own reflex to compare (both elements of the distractive lifestyle) conveniently embrace perfection and create stagnation.

I missed planning a trip to Alaska this summer because there were so many options and I wanted to make it amazing – to make it perfect.

Perfect is about that end result. But living is about the process.

Don’t hold yourself back from adventuring, enjoying, trying, or creating. Giving something your best effort may not always end up at perfect, but at least you ended up somewhere other than where you are.

Give it a try this week – done is better than perfect.
